DIY Resin Dominoes
Hi ๐๐ผ I have been having a TON OF FUN creating DOMINOES SETS! Have you ever made custom Dominoes game pieces? If not, I recommend you give it a try!
I purchased a DIY Mold from Amazon for my first set. I thought this would be a quick and fast project thinking that I was pouring resin into small rectangle cavities… “what could go wrong?” I thought! A lot can go wrong and did go wrong, but I am grateful for the project because it was a great learning experience. I was tempted to give up multiple times, but I told myself I had to keep going to the end.
In this dominoes tutorial video, I will show you how I created my first DIY domino game piece set, and I will share with you what I learned so that you can create your custom dominoes set!
What I Learned While Making My First Dominoes Set
- The quality of the resin mold does matter! The resin mold I am using was very inexpensive and thin, and it could not hold the weight of the resin on its own. Also, the mold did not flatten out with the weight of the resin, and the dotted side of the Dominoes has a curve.
- I didn’t expect the mold to hold so much resin! I ended up using 24 ounces of resin for this project!
- Avoid using heat with resin molds, if possible! While I have used heat successfully in past projects, this mold project did not like the heat. I had to tear the mold to release the resin, and I threw the mold in the trash after demolding the resin.

How to Fill the Dots on Your Resin Dominoes to Get Clean and Crisp Lines
I thought it would be helpful to show you a quick video on how I fill the dots with acrylic paint on my Dominoes set and clean the excess paint to get them clean and crisp lines. I was hesitant to try this technique because it seemed too easy. Once I got the hang of it, filling the dots on my resin Dominoes became fun!
What technique do you use to fill the dots on handmade Dominoes sets?

SAFETY FIRST
Creating with resin is fun, but learning how to safely use it is crucial. Believe it or not, safety is one of the most commonly overlooked steps when working with resin. I know I wanted to jump right in and start creating, but I quickly learned that I needed to read up on the safety measures so that I could enjoy this medium for years to come. Here are a few basic safety guidelines to review before you start working with resin:

- Well ventilated area. Working in a room with good circulation and/or open windows is crucial. Some resins emit fumes that can be toxic.
- Gloves. Yes, there is a thing called resin allergy. Wearing gloves is the easiest method to help with ongoing and prevent future skin conditions while working with resin.
- Respirator. Protecting your lungs is a top priority. Wearing a respirator provides consistent protection to your lungs while working with resin.
- Clean spills immediately. Donโt let resin sit on your table or floor. Use paper towels to scoop up as much as possible, then use denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol to clean up any remaining residue.
- Safety goggles. Goggles help prevent unexpected splashes from touching your eyes, but they prevent you from touching your eyes. If you are like me, you will touch your eye without thinking. Getting resin in your eyes is dangerous. If you get resin in your eyes, flush with water repeatedly and seek medical attention immediately!
- Apron. Aprons help prevent resin from getting on your clothes and then absorbing and touching the stomach. When working, you can easily focus on your process and not even realize resin has touched your belly for 5 minutes or more!
FAQ about Handmade Dominoes Sets with Resin
Can you play with resin Dominoes?
Absolutely YES! Handmade Dominoes sets are made to be played with. Just be mindful when cleaning the Dominoes sets. The dots are created by using water-based paint. Don’t soak them in water. I recommend cleaning with a damp, soft cloth for long results.
Are resin Dominoes durable?
Yes! Epoxy resin is a non-porous material that is lightweight and surprisingly durable. It is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof. It is impact-resistant and wear-resistant and it takes a lot to deform cured resin.
How do you seal epoxy resin Dominoes?
Sealing is not needed with epoxy resin because the resin is a non-porous material. It is naturally resistant to mold and bacteria.
What do you need to make resin Dominoes?
I have included a supply list with purchase links in this post with items I use and recommend. You will need several items including resin, a mold, mixing tools, colorants, and embellishments (if desired.) Please refer to the lists I have provided and contact me with any questions!
